Our HistorySince its founding in 1848 as Pittsburgh's first charted public hospital, The Western Pennsylvania Hospital has earned an international reputation for excellence and innovation in the care of patients, medical education and research. Today, this academic medical center has two hospital campuses that serve Pittsburgh and the surrounding five-state area: The Western Pennsylvania Hospital in Pittsburgh, comprised of 512 beds, and The Western Pennsylvania Hospital - Forbes Regional Campus in Monroeville with 340 beds. In 2004, West Penn Hospital became the only major teaching hospital in Pennsylvania to be recognized by the Solucient Institute for the third consecutive year as among the country's 100 Top Hospitals for overall performance. Solucient also named West Penn Hospital - Forbes Regional Campus one of the nation's 100 Top Performance Improvement Leader hospitals in 2004 and 2005. The hospital was the only health care facility in Allegheny County and one of just four hospitals in the state to be named to the select list. In 2006, The Western Pennsylvania Hospital became the first and only hospital in Pittsburgh and western Pennsylvania to achieve Magnet recognition status from the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC), the largest and most prominent nursing credentialing organization in the United States. Only about 3% of hospitals in the nation have achieved Magnet designation, which recognizes excellence in nursing and adherence to national standards for the organization and delivery of nursing services. The Hospital also has specialized centers for breast diagnostic imaging and surgical treatment of breast disease, bariatric surgery, computer-assisted orthopedic surgery and joint care, diabetes care, foot and ankle surgery, infant apnea, lung and thoracic disease, minimally invasive surgery, pain medicine, pelvic floor diseases, physical rehabilitation, reproductive medicine and infertility, and sleep disorders. West Penn's Burn Center was the first and is the only burn program in the region to receive verification honors by the Committee on Trauma of the American College of Surgeons and the American Burn Association. West Penn Hospital's obstetrics program is one of the busiest in the region and its neonatal intensive care unit is one of the region's largest referral resources for sick newborns. West Penn Hospital also is home to the patient offices for the Jones Institute at West Penn Allegheny Health System, an affiliate of the renowned Jones Institute for Reproductive Medicine of the Eastern Virginia Medical School. The Western Pennsylvania Cancer Institute provides the most advanced diagnostic and treatment services for all types of cancer, including lung, esophageal, breast, gynecologic, prostate, colorectal and blood-borne cancers. The Cancer Institute has earned national recognition for its bone marrow transplant program, one of the largest in Pennsylvania. The Institute also boasts leading-edge radiation oncology services and was the second cancer center in the world to offer Intensity Modulated Radiation Therapy. Patients have access to the latest treatment protocols through the Cancer Institute's participation in national research groups such as the Cancer and Leukemia Group B, American College of Surgeons Oncology Group, and Radiation Therapy Oncology Group.
Our CampusesThe Western Pennsylvania Hospital - Forbes Regional Campus offers a complete array of surgical, medical and rehabilitative care and has one of the region's busiest emergency departments. The Forbes Regional Campus also offers a Lifestyle Center dedicated to providing unique opportunities to help patients improve their health with personalized diet and fitness programs. Forbes Hospice, located in Oakland, is Pittsburgh's oldest and most respected end-of-life and palliative care program, providing care for families from Allegheny, Beaver, Butler, Washington and Westmoreland counties. Forbes Hospice has helped thousands of terminally ill people to live each day to the fullest, surrounded by the comfort of family and friends. The Western Pennsylvania Hospital in Pittsburgh admits more than 20,400 patients, logs more than 30,000 emergency visits, and performs approximately 14,000 surgical procedures annually. The West Penn Hospital - Forbes Regional Campus in Monroeville admits more than 14,000 patients, logs over 39,000 emergency visits, and performs nearly 10,000 surgeries annually. Approximately 1,200 physicians and 3,400 employees on both campuses share the hospital's commitment to excellence.
Our Professional Education ProgramsPart of West Penn Allegheny Health System, West Penn Hospital is a leader in the education of healthcare professionals, providing clinical training to third- and fourth-year medical students of the Philadelphia-based Temple University School of Medicine. West Penn also provides education programs for nurses and other members of the healthcare team, including a School of Nursing (affiliated with Clarion University of Pennsylvania); a School of Respiratory Care (affiliated with Indiana University of Pennsylvania); and the Pennsylvania State University/Western Pennsylvania Hospital Program of Radiologic Technology.

The mission of The Western Pennsylvania Hospital is to provide selected clinical and health related services to meet the general health needs of the residents of metropolitan Pittsburgh and certain of the specialized health needs of the residents of the tri-state area. To enhance its ability to provide these services, the Hospital is committed to operating a variety of educational programs for physicians, nurses, and other allied health professionals and promotes basic and clinical research.
